一、問候招呼

用法說明：
①“How do you do?”是與人初次見面對說的問候語。要注意應答時仍用“How do you do?”。使用這句問候語時不能再加稱呼。
②“How are you?”用於相互熟悉的人們之間的問候語，使用時常見句後 加上了對方的稱呼，如“How are you，Mrs White?”。回答時不能重複問句，可以說“Qhite well，thank you．”、“Pretty well,thank you．”或“Fine，thanks”等。“And you?”是“And how are you?”的省略形式。
③“Good morning”是用於早晨至午餐前的問候語。“Good afternoon”用 於下午至日落前，日落後則需改用“Good evening”來問候。
二、請求和委婉地征詢

用法說明：
①“Please have some tea.”是祈使句，句中的“p1ease”是“if you please”的省略形式，如把“please”放在句末則需用逗號隔開：“Have some tea.”這類祈使句中由於加上了“PIease”則顯得語氣委婉客氣。
②“After you”是“I’ll go after you.”的省略形式，這是為了突出“您先請”的表達方式。
2．委婉地征詢

用法說明：
①按英語的口語習慣，用過去式表示可在語氣上顯得委婉客氣，聽起來不會令人感到生硬，所以有些禮貌用語是用這種形式來表達的。如：用“Could you…?”來代替“Can you…?”，用“Would you…?”來代替“Will you…?”等等。但要說明，這類句式並沒有過去時態的意義。
又如：“Will you like a cup of tea?”和“Would you like a cup of tea”兩句相比較，後者的語氣則委婉得多。注意句中的“Will”並不表示“將來”，而是“願不願”、“要不要”的意思。它是用來請求對方辦件事時的客氣話。
再如：“Please wait a minute ？”與“Will you please wait a minute?”及Would you please wait a minute?”三句相比較則一句比一句委婉客氣。
②“DO you mind…?”是一種婉轉地征求對方意見的詢問形式，“Would you mind…?”則更為婉轉。“mind”一詞後通常接上名詞或動名詞，也可用以“if”引導的從句，如：“Do you mind my tuming up the radio?”、“Would you mind my turning up the radio?”、“Do(would)you mind if Iturning up the radio？”
③“May”和“Can”是情態動詞，在疑問句中用來征求對方的意見，詢問某事可不可以做。是一種客氣的表達方式。“CanI…?”和“MayI…?”可互通使用，但“May I…?”則更為委婉。
④“Shall…?”是用來征求對方意見，有“要不要由我來做某事”之意，往往帶有提議性。
